Reflexions on Aphrodite

Of the nature of women and Aphrodite’s Grace

I was appealed to to ponder about the nature of women cycles…. and my wandering lead me to Aphrodite again. Here is the part I wrote for a little thought “game” about cycles :

Despite the mainstream cliché, it is true that cycles are our womanly nature. Maybe not for what is most often believed to be.
Ok, our perioud and blood are the origin of life, and contrary to men, we bear life from beginning to end. That is what is accepted as one main difference (biologically) between men and women, what makes us who we are.

This is wonderful, and true, but it is not to be emphasized or simplified too much. The process of our womb is very much complicated, intricate, and it does affect our whole body, not just our womb. This is why we are not just womb on legs as some say, or as some feminists portray us without realising.

What really counts is that our period cycle is just the beginning of who we are. It is just one cycle among other womanly cycles. (cycles inside cycles, circles inside circles?). I would dare say : women are cycles, and  circles. Our wombs are often represented as such in the imagery, as a cup, or as a circle. A circle coincides to the watery and cyclical nature of the womb cycle. But there is more to it, because it coincides to the womanly genre in general. We are cycles, we are
cyclical. Contrary to men, and that is the main difference (but it is controversial because genres are also constructed, and there are great reflexions to make about transgender, but it is not the place) – so contrary to men who are linear, women ar cyclical. Our moods, our hormones, our periods… we are like the other (black) face of the moons. This is why we can be so much sensentive to the moon. You cannot tell looking at a woman in which phase she is, how she is going to be just next, but she definitely is under the influence of some cycle. The ebb and flow of woman energies and other things that a
are complex.

And I’d like to add a point. The ebb and flow obviously send us to an unstable or changing nature such as water, and the sea. There Aphrodite begins to show up, since she is born of the sea… But it then came to my mind, that those earthly cycles are in fact set in motion because of other cycles : the one of the moon first, and maybe others. So what a perfect picture which includes both the microcosm and the macrocosm of the Universe ! And there Aphrodite reveals in plain sight as I wrote before, since she is so cosmic and whole… Isn’t it some grace that we women are bound to the same processes of this Goddess in a way ?

I never stop learning.

In strange waters…

I’ve been dealing with a very curious fact since last June, concerning my relationship to the North.

I needed new runes, both as a personal wish and  an energetical logic. My runes were old, dating from 2006, when I was a total newby. Since then, I’ve read much, learned so much, practiced an intense meditation cycle on the whole futhark, practiced alone, done drawing meditation on runes… I needed a set that reflects my growth, that is charged with my knew knowledge, new energies.

At first, I wanted to carve wood because I love the texture, the relationship to the tree. And the tree was going to be birch, my totem and fellow, as for the previous ones. During spring I had been gathering fallen branches, not dead branches, branches that had been cut alive  by the goverment guys… (there is a massive problem of finance in the forest department in France) So I had sane branches of birch from different sizes. I chose one, I prepared the tools, and once I sat, I felt bad. Bad how ? I felt that it was really not a good time. After a few days, a week, I was even more perturbed since I understood that my runes were not to be either from birch or wood. There was a great refusal of the Spirits, or/and Rune Spirits.

I was sad, because I wanted new runes, and was very happy to craft myself (since I had very few tools and don’t do craft most of the time). I decided to let it go, I just waited and tried to forget it. Then in July, I made my annual trip to the ocean, and took my rest there. As each year, I experienced some of my most powerful mystic moments there, and this time it was precisely with the sea. I encountered and honored Ran in person. And there were a lot of sea-beings, sea-spirits around. We entered in a most unfathomable (deep) communion… and there, after a few days, I started picking flat stones.

Two weeks later understood then : my runes were to be crafted with flat sea-stones. So I did pick a huge lot of stones. But that was weird, I don’t like runes on stones, and it’s even worse on sea-stones. Because in my head, even if that’s greatly biased, I don’t associate runes with water. River water would do it I guess, and rain. But the waters of the sea ? It’s seems greatly weird if not repellent to me. But the Spirits, the Universe, made me understand that this was to be. So I started wondering and pondering about this fact. Why runes and water ? why runes from the sea ? I guess it could be a gift from Ran… but Ran is more of a taker. So maybe more a duty to her ? But I can’t understand what and why. Is it then about my strong relationship to the Spirits of the Sea ? But here again, why ?

If anyone passing there has any idea, remark, please do tell, because I’m lost in stranger waters.

‘My’ Aphrodite

She’s my everything.

Aphrodite. A name that sounds so strange, a spell in itself. She entered my life by chance entirely when I decided to join a polytheistic community last June. My dear fellow Sannion seems to be always along my spiritual path to help or witness because it’s him who introduced bac to Dionysos and now Aphrodite. During a year, I was able to read amazing articles about this misunderstood Goddess on his site, and it pervaded me slowly to this point. Then, he launched this marvellous Greek festival via his site in June. ‘Rhodophoria’, a poetic name that sounded real good to me, and a celebration that looked very inspired with its procession, so I wanted to be part of it, even a small part. At this time, I was in a greatly inspired mood since I was writing so many hymns and prayers to the God, so I decided to write Aphrodite her piece for Rhodophoria. To me, it was the typical case of an “intellectual” celebration : Aphrodite (energetically speaking) seemed far away, and my contribution was mental (writing).

But since then, she has never left me. She won’t leave, instead she seems to haunt me. I see and feel her everywhere, everytime ! She’s always behind my back, like a shadow and yet not like a shadow since she is more a solar presence. What is incredible is that she transcends and overpasses even my Patron Gods (Morrigan & Belenos). She’s just there, all the time, even when I don’t think about it, even when I feel disconnected and can’t reach any other spiritual entities (spirits and gods). And today, it seems I begin to know why.

Aphrodite is a perfect goddess, surprisingly (because even Gods can’t be always perfect usually). Perfect in beauty, perfect in presence, perfect in everything. She’s full of paradoxes : her energies are like the brightest, sharpest intensity, and yet perfect softness/sweetness. She embodies the perfect Lover (the full archetype with its lively, creative side and not just love), but she has also a maternal side. She is the Loving, the Lover, the one who makes the most of life, embraces it, crunches it with full teeth. She is also the Creative and Creator, the Queen of Beauty and Arts. But by being the Queen of Life, She is also Queen of the Land, of vegetation, of full life, plants & animals, the Mother of All Life (she verges on the Great Mother, Mother Earth type). And then, with all her grace, she is also the pot of transformation, the alchemist pot of all material and spiritual matter, of life, and of healing. She is Beauty, Grace, Sensuality in the wide acceptation (all senses), and Absolute Feminity. She is bright and shinny like a sun, so bright…. because she is the Cosmic one too. She’s not the daughter of cosmic giants for nothing. She comes from above, from the Cosmos, and she was purely born from the very matter of the cosmos, the elements. So she has a word to say in those matters, she holds the key of the Great Pattern ; she maintains the energies, the whole harmony…. of creation, of life, of all the cycles – cosmic, telluric, feminine… I see her definitely active in the seasons like the seasons’ blood, and in their blooming. She is such a master (mistress) of power, energy, and growth. She is the Provider, the Giver, even if she is not a Earth Goddess. She’s not Gaïa, she’s even more than Gaïa because she is Cosmic and Elemental, and Pure Life at its origin. So full of life…

And despite this greatness that is so much above and beyond our reach, she’s there ! She’s with me anytime… That’s when I got it. I would have liked to build her mountains of temples and artistic creations, but I could not find just one thing, I was just dry. Now I understand. She’s not my Matron Goddess, she’s above that as she is above Gaïa. She is just the whole Universe and Life. She is just evident and present. She is the incarnation of my love of life, that’s what unites us, why she’s here. A public action or temple or work of devotion is just useless because of her obviousness. Only my life, my whole life can serve as my absolute offering to her. The acceptation and mastering of my feminity, accepting to become a creator (because I can’t regard myself as an artist), accepting my difference and living the life that I want, accepting my intuitions and living by following my heart, managing to integrate beauty in all things : relationships, cooking, work… I can see the beauty, I can learn to bring in Grace and Sensuality, because She’s there everyday, every minutes. In my family, in my couple, in my friends, in my love of people, of things, of life, in the intensity of my feelings (that so many call “hypersensibility” like it is a drawback) and sensations, in my heart that beats like like it did at the origins, in human life, in animals and plants all around…  And all those ebbs and flows.

Where I couldn’t see and feel any spirits and gods in this oppressive city, She Stands present and strong. She is just so out of time, and such so modern. She is just Life… and it is everywhere. So I’ll be always beside her, I am her temple, and I can see, conjure and build her temple anywhere, anytime.

What a strange coincidence that I discover Columbine’s love for Aphrodite so soon after this experience.
